Just become doubtful product

If the food items are Mash-Booh (doubtful) or you are not sure about the status of a particular ingredient, you should call or write to the manufacturer of the product to verify the source of that ingredients. Usually the names and addresses of the companies and the bakeries are found on the food labels.
Disclaimer: We, somalitalk.com team, are not qualified to make any fatwas on Halal or Haram. We are simply gathering information and leaving you the judgement. But Remember that before Allah every body is responsible for his or her actions, including what he or she eats.

Quranic Prohibitions:

FOOD:

2: 173
"He has forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and flesh of swine , and on which any other name has been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity without willful disobedience, nor transgressing, due limits.... than he is not guilty, for Allah is forgiving, merciful."

5:4
"Forbidden to you are: Dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine and that on which has been invoked a name other than Allah's, and that killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death: That which has been eaten by a wild animal: Unless you are able to slaughter it, that which has been sacrificed on stone: (forbidden) also is the divination of arrows: that is impiety.

6:145
"Say: I find not in the Message received by me by inspiration any meat forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat of it, unless it be dead meat, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine, for it is an abomination, - or what is impious, (meat) on which a name has been invoked, other than God's. But even so, if a person is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, - Your Lord is Oft-Forgiving , Most Merciful."

16:115
"He has-only forbidden you dead meat, and blood; and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than God has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, - Your Lord is Oft-Forgiving , Most Merciful."

INTOXICANTS: 2:219
"They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say: "In them there is great sin, and some profit, for men, but sin is greater than the profit."

4:43
"O you who believe! Approach not prayers, with a mind befogged, until you can understand all that you say."

5:90
"O you who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination of Satan's handiwork. Avoid such (abomination) that you may prosper."

5:91
"Satan's plan is to sow enmity and hatred among you with intoxicants and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you not then give up."

PROPHET MOHAMMED (PBUH) ON THE SUBJECT OF LAWFUL AND PROHIBITED.

I. "That which is lawful is plain and that which is unlawful is plain and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regards to his religion and his honour, but he who falls into doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful." (narrated by Abu Abdullah An Numan Bin Bashar-R.A. Reported in Bukhari and Muslim.)

2. "Allah the Almighty has laid down religious duties, so do not neglect them; He has set boundaries, so do not cross them; He has prohibited some things, so do not violate them; about some things. He was silent out of compassion for you, not due to forgetfulness-, so do not seek after them." (narrated by Abu Tbalaba Al Khushani Jurtum Bin Nashir-R.A.reported in Ad-Daraqutni.)

3. "Allah the Almighty is pure and accepts only that which is pure. Allah has asked the believers to do that He asked the messengers, and the Almighty has said: (23:5 1) "0 you messengers! Eat of the pure things and do right." And Allah the Almighty has said: (2:172) "O you who believe! Eat of the pure things that we have provided you." Then the Prophet (pbuh) gave example of a man tired and dusty after a long journey, raises his hands to the sky and says: "O Lord! 0 Lord!".. while his food is unlawful, Ns drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so how can his prayers be answered?"(Narrated by Abu Huraira-R.A. reported in Muslim.)

INTRODUCTION:

It is not required of the believer to always find a scientific justification for the divine prohibitions. However, if they look and find it, they must share the information, that will increase their faith. To the contrary, lack of confirmation should not question the authenticity of the Quran. We believe that all Quranic statements are true, and if science has not confirmed some of them yet, it will do so in the future, may be it needs to examine its data more deeply or repeat the experiment.

For the benefits of non-medical readers, before I describe the topic in question i.e. hormonal and behavioral effect of prohibited food, intoxicants and ingredients, I must define some medical terms and inter-relationships:

HORMONES:

These are the powerful secretions of Endocfine (internal) glands. They control the functions of all organs, and even individual cells. They are made from proteins (peptides) or sterols in nature. The endocrine glands are hypothalmus which secretes various releasing hormones for pituitary, and pituitary which secretes hormones for target endocrine glands. Both of them are inside the brain. Target endocrine glands are thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones control our metabolism, energy level, and temperature tolerance.

Behind them are para-thyroid gland which control our calcium metabolism. In the abdomen are adrenal glands above the kidneys which secrete cortisone, the life saving essential hormone, and catecholamines and aldosterone which control our blood pressure and heart-rate. Steroids and catecholamines are derived from cholesterol. Also in the abdomen is the pancreas which secretes insulin which lowers blood sugar, and glycogen which raises a low blood sugar. Lower down in the pelvis are gonads, ovaries in women, and testes in men, which secrete estrogen, progesterone and testosterone respectively. All these hormones have internal control, and influence each other. They control our growth, muscle mass, bone development, temperature tolerance, blood pressure, energy, fertility, sex desire, thirst, and well being in general.

HOW DO HORMONES AFFECT BEHAVIOUR:

The site of secretion of releasing hormone, and of neurotransmitter in the brain are the same in the hypothalmic area. Most of the psychotropic drugs either act by increasing or decreasing the neurotransmitter levels i.e. epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine or endorphrin level in the hypothalmic area. Similarly, peurotransmitters influence hormone secretion.

Clinically we see various behavioral manifestations in endocrine disorders. Hypoglycemic patients (low blood sugar) suffer from depression and poor mental concentration and patients with low thyroid have impotency and depression, while patients with high thyroid have agitation, irritability, and lack of sleep. Patients with low cortisone (Addison Disease) have severe depression while with high cortisone have hallucination and psychosis. Patients with high testosterone have been claimed to have criminal tendencies (i.e. rapists) while low testosterone have behavioral problems in adjustment. Patients with calcium changes.

Physiologically, boys and girls are different in playing behavior i.e. aggressive versus passive (playing with mechanical toys and guns versus dolls) due to difference in their sex hormone even in pre-pubertal age. This becomes more obvious after full sex differentiation takes place. In fact, by changing the sex hormone level of a given sex one can change not only the sexual behavior but the aggressiveness of a particular sex. Homosexual males have been noted to have less male sex hormones, and on the other hand, repeated sex offending males can be "cured" by castration or by the injection of the female hormone progesterone. In one experiment, female rats whose mothers were treated with testosterone while pregnant showed male behavior pattern of threatening peer, rough play, and increased sexual activity as compared to a control rat. This shows that testosterone not only affects the individual, but the offspring as well. Girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (excessive testosterone secretion) when in post puberty age show tomboy attitude with liking rough sports, preferring boys as playmates, and low interest in dolls and baby care. Sexual behavior is not only affected by testosterone, but also by the pineal gland which is turned off and on by light and darkness.

Hormones, not directly but indirectly by controlling\sugar, calcium, sodium balance, affect behavior in general to include anger, love, anxiety, panic attacks, and agitation. The hyperactivity in children could be due to low blood sugar or due to many food preservatives and coloring agent like nitrites, and Dye No. 5.

After this much introduction of hormones, and behavior, I turn to the main theme.

HORMONAL AND BEHAVIORAL EEFFECT OF PORK MEAT AND FAT INGESTION:

Pork meat and fat are not only prohibited to Muslims, but were also prohibited to Jews and Christians as well because "Swine were designed to be scavengers, to eat up filth." In old testament Leviticus Chapter 7-8, it is mentioned about swine "Though he divides the hoof and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud, he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall you not eat." There is no mention in the Bible that Jesus ever ate pork in his life. It was Paul who declared all food and drink permissible saying, "To the pure, everything is pure."

THE LIFE OF THE SWINE:

To get a first hand idea, I interviewed farmers of Fisher, Indiana, who breed swine. According to them "Swine is cheaper to breed, since it does not require pasture, it can live on manure and other such items including dead meat. In fact, it can even eat its own feces. Their sexual habits are also different from other animals like cow, sheep and goat. Swine have very little shame i.e. engage in sex acts anytime anyplace. The female hog is very aggressive in sexual activities when she is in "heat" she does not care about anything (i.e. food or privacy) until she has the sex. They i.e. swine, also lick the genitals of their partners after sex like dogs, but not other mammals like cow, sheep or goat."

WHY IS PORK FAT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ANIMAL FAT:

Fats are lipids which are a source of energy. They can be of vegetable source or of animal source. Triglycerides are neutral fats with 1 molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids. The fatty acids can be saturated or unsaturated. The more unsaturated fats have high melting points. The iodine value of fat gives the degree of un-saturation. The iodine value of lard is 65, beef 45, and mutton 32. After ingestion, emulsification of fat takes place in the stomach by gastric lipase. By pancreatic lipase hydrolysis of triglyceride into glycerol and fatty acids takes place.

The fatty acids and glycerol are used by various tissues like muscle, heart, kidney, and liver for an energy source. Herbivorous (plant eating) animals have unsaturated fatty acid on the position 2 of the triglyceride (tg) molecule, while the carnivorous (meat eating) animals have saturated fatty acid at the position 2. Pancreatic lipase (pl) can not hydrolyze TG molecule if saturated fatty acid at position 2. Fat of dogs, rats, cats, and pork, have saturated fatty acids on positions 2.

If a person eats fat of herbivorous animal, the fat will be hydrolyzed, absorbed, and then re synthesized and stored as human fat, while that of carnivorous animals and pork fat will not be hydrolyzed and therefore has to be deposited in humans as pork fat in the adipose tissue.

WHAT HAS DEPOSITION OF PORK FAT TO DO WITH HORMONE AND BEHAVIOR IN HUMANS:

Circulating hormones are in bound form and free form. The free form has to be attached to receptor in fat tissue before becoming active. Obesity decreases the number of receptors therefore the hormones cannot be utilized. Therefore, if the hormone is insulin, it leads to diabetes (type 2); and if it is testosterone, it leads to sub fertility and amenorrhea. The amount of fat also controls hormone release. Therefore we see menarche is delayed in athletic girls with less fat, and occurs early in sedentary overweight girls.

It can be postulated that in humans who have pork fat deposit there is derangement in the binding of hormones, therefore they have a higher level of circulating active hormone. It is possible that the sexual promiscuity and deviant sexual practices of pork eating society is due to what they eat! After all, it has been said by nutritionists, "You are what you eat."

Since this is a paper on hormones and behavior, the time does not permit discussing the effect of pork on cholesterol, sodium and the relationship to heart disease.

EFFECTS OF DEAD MEAT AND BLOOD INGESTION: Dead meat is the meat of animal which died before slaughtering and blood could not flow out, and blood ingestion is not only the drinking of blood as it was prevalent in the Jahiliya of Arabia or even now in Africa (and in France) but also the blood which is retained inside the meat by improper killing of the animal. All hormones, and antibodies are retained in the blood, and all infective organisms including virus flourish in the blood media, therefore ingestion of such will be dangerous medically. It may also induce animal instincts as seen in carnivorous animals like dogs, cats, and lions.

HORMONAL EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL:

Both in acute and chronic alcoholism, endocrine glands are affected. Hypoglycemia is a manifestation of acute alcoholism which may be severe, and can lead to coma. This should be recognized and treated with dextrose intravenously since it mat not respond to glycogen. Low magnesium with resultant low calcium is another effect resulting in poor concentration, muscle twitching and even seizure. Increase in urine flow is due to depression of antidiuretic hormone.

Chronic alcoholism leads to pancreatitis with failure of pancreatic endocrine system (sometimes Diabetes) and exocrine gland (malnutrition). This leads to protein deficiency leading to reduced production of testosterone, which may lead to impotency, gynecomastia in men and amenorrhea in women. Alcoholics can also have a pseudo (false) cushing syndrome. Alcohol related liver disease causes increased clearance of testosterone with testicular atrophy leading to true hypogonadism. Sperm formation is also affected leading to infertility. Infants born to an alcoholic mother can also have undercended testes and labial hypoplasia. In addition, the cortisol levels are increased during withdrawal, while LH and LH-RH levels are suppressed during chronic alcoholism.

BEHAVIORAL EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL: Alcohol, being a central nervous system depressant, depresses both facilitatory and inhibitory pathways. It is the suppression of the latter that abolishes the shame and removes control. Therefore, what a normal person will be prevented from doing i.e. abusive language, undressing in public, etc. will not be prevented under the influence of alcohol. There are more serious behavioral disorders described to include brain disjunction in 50- 70%, memory loss, depression both acute and chronic, high suicide rate, mood fluctuation, delirium tremorous (DTS) in withdrawal state, and blackout spells during drinking. One-third of all auto accidents are due to alcoholism. Under the influence of alcohol are mental judgement and motor skills, which are both affected. Sometimes the level of consciousness is also affected. Alcohol had been found to be at the root of family violence, sexual violence, rape, assault, and child abuse.

Alcohol is not an aphrodisiac, as it is claimed. Not only does it depress the central nervous system's effect on the libido, but actually lowers the penile blood flow and tumescence (swelling) thereby decreasing the performance.

EFFECTS OF NARCOTICS (COCAINE & MARIJUANA) ON HORMONES AND BEHAVIOR: Both LSD and cocaine cause decreases in plasma testosterone and LH. The aphrodisiac effect is due to local anesthesia causing prolonged erection and central stimulation causing general well being. Also by inhibiting the inhibitions, they encourage engagement in unusual sex acts like sodomy or oral genital sex.

Psychologically they cause mood elation and a false sense of euphoria followed by depression, anxiety and agitation Panic attacks, suicidal tendencies, and violent behaviors are not uncommon. Chronic usage may lead to schizophrenia, paranoia, and a variety of psychiatric disorders, even infants born to cocaine addicted mothers show signs of withdrawal.

EFFECTS OF INGREDIENTS ON HORMONES AND BEHAVIOR: If ingredients are of prohibited nature, i.e. pork, lard, alcohol, cocaine etc., the effect will be as described earlier, though because of the small quantity, the effect will be slow and may be cumulative.

More serious are items like sugar which causes reactive hypoglycemia; sodium which may lead to hypertension; DES (Diethylstillbestrol, a female hormone given to cattle and chickens to increase fat and muscle content) linked to vaginal and cervical cancer in women; and artificial sweeteners like saccharine related to bladder cancer in rats, and aspartame related to brain damage.

CONCLUSION:
More research is needed on all of the above areas, especially those affecting the life style of Muslims. Though usage of prohibited items are not commonly found in Muslims, the dangers also may come to their health and spirits by the effects of non-prohibited items like western rock music, dress (i.e. tight jeans affecting testicular temperature) and sexual practices, and cigarette smoking.

Why Zabeeha? By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Almighty ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) in HIS infinite mercy has made certain animals halal (permissible) for this Ummah. We are required to be thankful to HIM by following the dictates of the Quran and Sunnah by ensuring that HIS name is taken upon slaughtering of the animal. ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) states in the Noble Quran:
  1. "For every nation We have specified a rite (for slaughtering) so that they may take the name of ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) upon (the slaughter of) the animals granted to them as sustenance." (Al-Hajj 34)
  2. "And consume not of that whereupon the name of ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) was omitted (at the time of slaughter). Indeed it is a transgression. Verily the shayaateen inspire their friends to cause division with you. If you obey them, you are indeed mushriks (ascribing partners to ALLAH)." (Al-An'aam 122)
  3. "So take the name of ALLAH upon them (at the time of slaughter) while they stand in rows." (Al-Hajj 36). This statement is in reference to camels which are slaughtered by nahr (a swift stab of the neck which severs the four arteries) while standing.
  4. "… and such animals upon which they mention not the name of ALLAH only to fabricate a lie against him." (Al-An'aam 138)
  5. "Forbidden to you are maytah (carrion), flowing blood, the flesh of swine and that slaughtered for other than ALLAH as well as the (animal) expiring by strangulation, illness or pain, falling (from a height), by a wound (sustained through fighting) and by falling to a predator and (about to be consumed), excepting those (animals) upon which you effect Zaka (Shar'ee slaughter)." (Al-Maa-idah 3)
From the above Aayaats, the following points are understood:
  1. Meat is not in the same category as other nutrients.
  2. The most important condition is that Tasmiyyah (taking the name of ALLAH) be pronounced at the time of slaughter. The Aayaats clearly explain the impermissibility of those animals whose slaughter was not preceded by Tasmiyyah.
  3. The impermissibility of those animals whose lives were ended by means other than Zabah (Shar'ee slaughter) of which Tasmiyyah is a condition. All such animals are maytah (carrion) and are expressly forbidden.
  4. The Zabiha (animal slaughtered) by a kaafir (non-believer) or mushrik (polytheist) is haram (unlawful). However, those Ahlul Kitaab (People of the Book) who also hold the Aqeedah (belief) of Tasmiyyah at the time of slaughter have been excluded from the kuffaar majority.
  5. The Aayaat number 122 of Al-An'aam explains consumption of meat not slaughtered with Tasmiyyah as Fisq – transgression and disobedience. The Aayat then explains that to regard consumption of such meat as halal is nothing but a teaching of Shaytaan to cause division among the Ummah. The Aayat also warns that obedience of shaytaan in this matter is a kin to shirk (ascribing partners to ALLAH).
Imam Bukhari has quoted this same Aayat in his magnum opus under the chapter, 'Intentional Omission of the Tasmiyyah at the time of Slaughter'. It's explained by Hafiz ibn Hajar, the renowned commentator of Sahih Bukhari, in the following words:
Imam Bukhari (may ALLAH be pleased with him) wishes to point out by citing this Aayat the reproach against using this Aayah as proof to legalize omission of Tasmiyyah by inventing baseless interpretations of the Aayat and understanding it in a manner contrary to clear import.' (Fathul Bari, vol. 9, pg. 778; Qadeemi)
The Jurists (Fuqahaa) have unanimously agreed that consumption of an animal slaughtered by a Muslim with intentional omission of Tasmiyyah or regarding such as insignificant is unlawful (haram). Imam Shaaf'ee (may ALLAH be pleased with him) has also concurred with this view. (Jawaahirul Fiqh, vol. 2, pg. 388; Darul Uloom from Kitaabul Umm and Tafseer Mazhari)
Imam Abu Yusuf states: 'The ruling regarding the animal upon which Tasmiyyah was omitted (at the time of slaughter) is not subject to Ijtihaad (independent deduction of a ruling from Quran and Hadith). If a judge rules the permissibility of its sale, his ruling will not be given effect due to it being contrary to consensus of opinion.' (Ibid, pg.390; Hidaaya)
It should be noted significantly that the above discussion of impermissibility is with regard to a Muslim slaughterer and not a non-Muslim.
In the case of a Muslim forgetfully omitting the Tasmiyyah, the animal will be permissible for consumption as is the ruling of all the four Madhaahib based on the Hadith of Prophet (may ALLAH be pleased with him). A believer always slaughters upon the name of ALLAH, whether he (remembers to) recites it or not.' (Fathul Bari, vol. 9, pg. 793; Qadeemi)
Animals slaughtered by modern day Jews and Christians 'The food of Ahlul Kitaab (People of the Book) is lawful for you as is your food for them.' (Al-Maa-idah 5)
Regarding the word, "Ta'aam" (food), ibn Abbaas, Ibn Umamah, Mujaahid and others (may ALLAH be pleased with them) say that it refers to slaughtered animals. This matter (permissibility of these animals) is unanimously agreed upon by all scholars since they also hold the belief of the prohibition of slaughter save in ALLAH's name and also due to the fact that they mention only the name of ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) upon their animals of slaughter. (Jawaahirul Fiqh, vol. 2, pg. 4040; from Ibn Katheer)
The reason for permissibility has been explained clearly by Allaamah ibn Katheer. Due to the unity of belief, regarding slaughter, between Muslims and the Jews and Christians of that particular time, ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) had permitted consumption of their slaughter. The Ulama of the time had based their rulings on this very same reasoning.
When this unity of belief came into doubt, many great Sahaba (may ALLAH be pleased with them) had not hesitated to rule prohibition.
'With regards to a Kitaabi, when he omits Tasmiyyah (the name of ALLAH) upon his slaughter and takes some other name, his slaughter is not consumable. This is the ruling of Abu Darda, Ubadah bin Saamit and large faction of the Sahaba (may ALLAH be pleased with them).' (Jawaahirul Fiqh, vol. 2, pg. 407; Darul Uloom – from Bahrul Muheet)
Regarding the Christian tribe of Banu Taghlib, Ali (may ALLAH be pleased with him) ruled the following:
'Hafiz ibn Jawzi (may ALLAH's mercy be upon him) has narrated with his sanad (chain of narrators) from Ali (may ALLAH be pleased with him), 'Do not consume the slaughter of the Christians of Banu Taghlib since they have not held to any more of Christianity than their drinking of wine.' (Ibid, pg.460 – from Tafseer Mazhari)
It is a well-known fact that the majority of present day Christians and Jews no longer hold to this Aqeedah (belief) regarding slaughter. Meat slaughtered by pagans, mushriks (polytheists) and atheists is often consumed. Slaughter-houses employ machine slaughter wherever possible and do not choose employees based on their religious beliefs, be it pagans, atheists or polytheists, to carry out the slaughter.
The Ruling
Based on the above juridical references, Qadhi Thanaullah (may ALLAH's mercy be upon him) a renowned Jurist of his time stated the following:
'The correct and accepted view according to us is the first one. That the slaughter of the Ahlul Kitaab with intentional omission of Tasmiyyah (taking the name of ALLAH) or slaughter on some other name (besides that of ALLAH) is not consumable, if this fact is ascertained with certainty or this is the condition prevailing among them. By this, the prohibition (of the Sahaba) from consuming the slaughter of the Christian Arabs can be easily understood. Likewise, the ruling of Ali (may ALLAH be pleased with him) (regarding the Banu Taghlib)' becomes clear. It is likely that Ali (may ALLAH be pleased with him) had ascertained that their omission of Tasmiyyah upon slaughter or that they slaughtered upon some other name (besides ALLAH). A similar ruling has been issued regarding the non-Arab Christians that if it is their normal habit to slaughter without Tasmiyyah, their slaughter is not consumable. Concerning the present day Christians there is no doubt in the fact that their methods do not fulfill requirements of Shar'ee slaughter, but they usually cause the death of their animals by other lethal measures, e.g. machine slaughter, etc. hence, their slaughter is impermissible.' (Jawaahirul Fiqh, vol. 2, pg. 411; from Tafseer Mazhari)
The Correct Understanding of the Hadith of Bukhari (cited by many people to justify their claims) "It has been narrated from Aisha (may ALLAH be pleased with her) that some persons said to Prophet (peace be upon him), 'People bring to us meat. We know not whether the name of ALLAH (Praise and Glory be to HIM) has been taken (upon its slaughter) or not?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, 'You people say 'Bismillah' and eat it.' Aisha (may ALLAH be pleased with her) says, 'the people referred to (in this Hadith) were new Muslims.' (Bukhari, vol. 2, pg. 828; Deoband)
It is clear that the slaughterers were Muslims, not disbelievers. This is further elucidated by Imam Maalik (may ALLAH's mercy be upon him)'s narration (of the same Hadith) where the addition of, 'this was in the beginning of Islam.' (Fathul Bari, vol. 9, pg. 792; Qadeemi) is found.
To believe that these people were non-Muslims is in fact tantamount to accusing the noble Sahaba of the Messenger of ALLAH (peace be upon him) of the heinous crime of consuming meat slaughtered by polytheists which is expressly forbidden in the Quran:
'Forbidden to you is carrion … till … and that slaughtered for other than ALLAH.' (Al-Maa-idah 3)
The actual meaning of this Hadith, as understood by similar narrations is that one should not entertain unfounded doubts about a Muslim that he would neglect to mention the name of ALLAH upon his slaughter.
This is what is understood by the context of the Hadith since the answer of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to the question was, 'Say Bismillah and eat.' It is as though they (the questioners) were told, 'That is not your concern, rather what should concern you is to consume it (wholesomely in the Sunnah manner) by saying Bismillah before partaking thereof.' (Fathul Bari vol. 9, pg.793, Qadeemi)
Hafiz ibn Abdul-Barr (may ALLAH be pleased with him) has emphasized this point very clearly:
Similarly, the slaughter of the Bedouin Muslims will be permissible (for consumption) since they usually know of the Tasmiyyah (at the time of slaughter). Ibn Abdul Barr (may ALLAH be pleased with him) has concluded, In this Hadith, it is understood that the slaughter of a Muslim should be consumed and he should be regarded as having taken Tasmiyyah upon its slaughter (even when one is not certain about this fact) because with regards to a Muslim, one should entertain nothing but good thoughts unless concrete evidence is established to the contrary. (Fathul Bari vol. 9, pg.793, Qadeemi)
This import is borne out by other narrations of this same Hadith as follows:
The narration of Ibn Uyayna (may ALLAH be pleased with him) (one of the Huffaaz of Hadith) has the addition, 'accept their oaths and eat', i.e. take their word for it that they have taken Tasmiyyah upon slaughter (and partake without doubts). (Ibid pg. 793)
The narration of Abu Sa'eed:
Imaam Tabrani has recorded the narration of Abu Sa'eed though with a difference in wording that he said, 'accept their word that they have effected (Shar'ee) slaughter.' (and consume it without doubt). (Ibid)
The narration of Imaam Tahawi (may ALLAH be pleased with him):
Some of the Sahaba (may ALLAH be pleased with them) questioned the Messenger of ALLAH (peace be upon him) that, 'Some Bedouins bring to us meat, cheese and fat. We know not the condition of their Islam, (i.e. they are Muslims but of what caliber, we are unaware).' The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, 'Check that which is prohibited by ALLAH and abstain therefrom. Whatever ALLAH Ta'ala has not discussed, he has made a concession for you. Your LORD does not forget.' Thus, say Bismillah (and partake). (Ibid)
Explaining this Hadith, Allaamah ibn Teen comments:
Concerning Tasmiyyah upon slaughter carried out by others of which they are unaware, there is no obligation upon them regarding it. The (slaughter) will only be held incorrect when such evidence is established. ALLAH Ta'ala has not made it obligatory upon any Muslim to be aware of Tasmiyyah upon the slaughter by another Muslim, since the slaughter by another Muslim will be always regarded as correct (accompanied by Tasmiyyah) unless evidence is established to the contrary. (Ibid pg. 794)
The above should be sufficient to clarify any doubt in the meaning of the Hadith of Bukhari.
Importance of Muslim Unity with regards to Halal Meat
Shaytaan is ever prepared to bring about division as this will inevitably lead to the collapse of the Muslim Ummah. In his untiring efforts, he has overlooked no sphere of life to cause his mischief even to the extent of nourishment. ALLAH Ta'ala has warned us of Shaytaan's inroads in this regard as has been explained already. Shaytaan, possessed of a keen intelligence and discernment knows full well that once the Muslims cannot interact and mix with one another due to suspicion in regards to Halal and Haram, this will bring about the much awaited split in the global community of Islam. To combat this, it is required that Muslims take courage and band together to solve this problem, irrespective of color and race, since the commands of ALLAH Ta'ala are universal. Due to this solidarity, the Muslims of South Africa, although a minority (around 3 – 4 %) have progressed far ahead in eliminating this problem. With a bit of extra physical and monetary sacrifice, they have managed to establish their own abattoirs in different parts of the country.
If Muslims in other parts of the world who have, Alhamdulillah, become a sizeable community were to show such unity and get together, there is every confidence that the problem would be eliminated with little difficulty.
To conclude this, let us ponder upon the following words of the Prophet (peace be upon him):
'The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear. Between these lie matters of confusion. Regarding these, many are ignorant. Whomsoever falls into these, falls into the unlawful, like a shepherd grazing (his flock) upon a sanctuary's perimeter, very soon falls into trespass. Beware! Every king possesses a sanctuary and the sanctuary of ALLAH Ta'ala are HIS prohibitions. Take note! In the body resides a piece of flesh, upon its reformation is the entire body’s reform. Upon its corruption is the whole body corrupted. Listen! It is the heart.' (Arba’een Nawawiy)

Haram (Prohibited) Foods in Islam

"He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name has been invoked besides that of ALLAH. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then he is guiltless. For ALLAH is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful." (Al-Baqara: 173)

Alhamdulillah was-salatu was-salaamu 'ala rasoolillah. All thanks and praise is to ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, and we ask that HIS blessings and peace be upon HIS messenger, Muhammad, salla ALLAHu alaihi wa sallam.
This Aya from Surat Al-Baqara lists the categories of meat and meat derivatives, which are prohibited in the Muslim diet. The meat of animals, which die as a result of any reason other than slaughter, is prohibited. This would include falling from a height, being gored by another animal, as a result of the stunning process in a slaughterhouse, by strangulation, etc. Any animal, which has not been slaughtered, is considered a dead animal and the meat from this animal is considered dead meat and is prohibited. This does not apply to fish, seafood and locusts, which are Halal even if they are not slaughtered (dead).
Blood, which pours from a body, whether properly slaughtered or not. This excludes the blood, which may remain in organs such as the liver or spleen.
All items derived from pigs (swine) are prohibited. This includes the meat (such as bacon, ham, pork chops, etc.), the fat (lard), the skin, the tendons and ligaments (gelatin), enzymes (pepsin) and any other ingredients derived from the animal.
All items derived from animals slaughtered while invoking a name other than that of ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, The Creator. If one slaughters in the name of an individual, any other deity, a cause or any entity other than ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, the entire animal is prohibited.
However, under certain conditions, there is no sin incurred if one partakes of these prohibited items. All the following conditions must be met to escape the sin:
  1. Extreme need - no other food is available, including non-meat items, and some sustenance is required to maintain life. In fact, if no other food is available and one chooses to abstain, and then starves to death, they have committed a sin punishable by going to hell-fire. Consequently one must partake of just enough to sustain life.
  2. Limited quantity - only the smallest amount necessary to sustain life is allowed. One should not have a full meal. (Remember, for a Muslim, a full meal is one third the volume of the stomach in food and one third in drink.) Some believe that three bites are all that are acceptable.
  3. Halal activity - one who sets out to break the rules is not held without sin if he indulges in these prohibited items. If one goes out to commit a crime (sin), runs out of food and only finds these prohibited items, he is not allowed to partake of them; not even to the extent of the limited quantity defined above.
  4. Lack of desire - there should be no desire to partake of this prohibited food. However, out of extreme need, one may have to "force it down" to survive.
  5. Seek alternative - one must continue to seek a Halal alternative and immediately abstain from further prohibited products when the Halal alternative is found. Of course, if vegetables, roots, berries or other items are available, then these items cannot be eaten.
If one qualifies to eat any of the prohibited items discussed here, then ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, will hold him without sin for that, for ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.

Why Bother With Halal?

Do you have to drive a long distance to find Halal meat? Does it take you longer to shop because you have to read the ingredient labels on everything you buy? Is it worth the extra time and energy to look for Halal products to eat?
There are many reasons to eat Halal products. First and foremost is that ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, has commanded us to do that. Other reasons are it is cleaner, healthier and it has many blessings. Another reason is explained in the following Hadith, narrated by Muslim:
Abu Huraira, radiya ALLAHu anhu, reported that the Prophet, salla ALLAHu alaihi wa sallam, said: "O people, ALLAH is Good (Pure) and HE accepts only good (purity), and ALLAH has commanded the believers in the same way HE commanded the Messengers. ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, said:
O you who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided for you and be grateful to ALLAH, if it is HE you worship. (Al-Baqara, 172)

And HE said:
O you messengers! Enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I am well-acquainted with (all) that you do. (AL-Mu'minoon, 51)

Then he (the Prophet, salla ALLAHu alaihi wa sallam,) informed us of the disheveled man who travels long distances, and extends his hands toward the sky (in dua) and asks, O my LORD, O my LORD and his food is haram and his drink is haram and his clothing is haram and his sustenance is haram; how will his supplication be granted?"
There are many lessons in this Hadith. The one we want to focus on now is how does what we eat affect whether our dua will be granted or not? It is clear from the Hadith that the person who eats haram and drinks haram will not have his dua granted.
All of us face difficulties in life, and when that happens, we seek help. It is always best to seek help from ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, so as we face these difficulties, we raise our hands in dua for help and patience. A condition for the granting of our dua is that we eat Halal and we drink Halal. (Also that we earn our living by Halal means and that we cloth ourselves in an acceptable manner.)
The Muslim Ummah today is faced with many problems and challenges, from the genocide in Chechnya, Bosnia, and elsewhere, to the occupation of Al Aqsa, to the hunger in Somalia and Iraq. Everyday, we raise our hands in dua for our needs and those of our fellow Muslims in these and other lands. Is the situation improving? Could it be that little crouton on the Halal salad contains some animal shortening or the beef in the restaurant is not quite Halal? What about all the food imported into the Muslim countries from the non-Muslim world. Are we kidding ourselves by accepting food that has not been properly supervised? Before sleeping tonight, take a few minutes to consider the implications of this Hadith.
